Xiao Chai Hu Tang / Treat chronic liver diseases ( 小柴胡汤)
Bai Zhu (Rz. Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Tonifies Spleen, augments Qi, dries Dampness, promotes water metabolism. Combinations: With Fu Ling and Zhi Gan Cao for Spleen and Stomach Qi Deficiency.
Fu Ling (Poria) Promotes urination, leaches Dampness, strengthens Spleen, harmonises Middle Jiao. Combinations: With Bai Zhu to strengthen Spleen and resolve Dampness.
Chen Pi (Per. Citri Reticulatae) Regulates Qi, adjusts Middle, relieves diaphragm, descends Qi, dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm.
Chao Xiang Fu (Dry-fried Rz. Cyperi) Spreads and regulates Liver Qi, alleviates pain. Combinations: With Sha Ren and Mu Xiang for ulcer and digestive disturbance.
Bai Dou Kou (Fr. Amomi Rotundus) Promotes Qi movement, transforms Dampness, strengthens Stomach, warms Middle Jiao, descends Qi, stops vomiting. Combinations: With Sha Ren for fullness in chest, epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea from Cold-Dampness. With Chen Pi for chest/abdomen fullness, belching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea from Spleen/Stomach Deficiencies.
Sha Ren (Fr. Amomi) Promotes Qi movement, transforms Dampness, strengthens Spleen, stops vomiting, warms Middle, stops diarrhoea.
Zhi Gan Cao (Rx. Glycyrrhizae Preparata) Tonifies Spleen, augments Qi, moderates spasms, alleviates pain, harmonises harsh properties of other herbs, guides herbs to all twelve channels.
Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) Breaks up Stagnant Qi, reduces accumulation, descends Qi, unblocks bowels, removes Stagnant Food.
Huo Xiang (Herba Agastaches) Harmonises Middle Jiao, stops vomiting, condenses.
Chai Hu (Rx. Bupleuri) Resolves Shao Yang disorders, reduces fever, spreads Liver Qi and relieves Stagnation. Combinations: With Huang Qin, for Heat in the Shao Yang with alternating chills and fever, and nausea and for restoring normal function of the Liver and Gallbladder. With Huang Qin, Zhi Ban Xia and Ren Shen, for Shao Yang Heat. With Huang Qin, Zhi Ban Xia, Ren Shen and Zhi Gan Cao, for weak patients.
Huang Qin (Rx. Scutellariae) Clears Lung Heat, drains Fire and calms ascending Liver Yang.
Zhi Ban Xia (Rz. Pinelliae Preparatum) Dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm, descends Rebellious Qi, harmonizes the Stomach and stops vomiting. Combinations: With Huang Qin, for Phlegm-Heat induced Rebellious Qi with cough, nausea, and vomiting. With Sheng Jiang, for vomiting due to Cold, Thin Mucus.
Sheng Jiang (Rz. Zingiberis Recens) Releases the exterior, disperses Cold, stops vomiting, stops cough and reduces the toxicity of other herbs. Combinations: With Da Zao, alleviates epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting by strengthening the Spleen. With Zhi Ban Xia, for vomiting and productive cough due to Phlegm-Dampness.
Ren Shen (Rx. Ginseng) Tonifies Yuan, Spleen, Stomach, Lung and Heart Qi.
Da Zao (Fr. Jujube) Strengthens the Spleen, tonifies Qi and moderates and harmonizes the harsh properties of other herbs.
