Flos Inulae (Inula Flower)

About the Herb
Flos Inulae, known in Chinese as Xuan Fu Hua, is the flower of the Inula plant, a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae). This bright yellow flower, which blossoms in the summer and autumn, has been a staple in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Unlike many other medicinal flowers that are used for clearing heat, Flos Inulae is noted for its warming and descending properties. The flower heads are harvested when they are in full bloom and are traditionally prepared by being stir-fried with honey. This process is believed to enhance their therapeutic effects and reduce any harshness, making the herb more palatable and gentle on the body.
The primary role of Flos Inulae in herbal medicine is to address issues related to the accumulation of phlegm and the rebellious upward flow of Qi, particularly in the Lungs and Stomach. It is a key herb for treating coughs with copious yellow phlegm, chest congestion, and feelings of fullness or distension in the chest and diaphragm. Furthermore, its ability to redirect Stomach Qi downwards makes it effective for relieving nausea, vomiting, and hiccupping. By warming the core and transforming phlegm, Flos Inulae helps to restore the natural downward movement of energy in the upper body, providing relief from respiratory and digestive discomfort.
